Wise Launches UK Current Accounts with Travel Hub and Interest-Earning Features

Fintech companies that initially focused on cross-border payments are increasingly expanding into full-service banking products as competition intensifies in digital finance. Multi-currency accounts, interest-bearing balances, and travel-focused features are becoming key differentiators for platforms aiming to position themselves as primary financial hubs for globally mobile users.

Money transfer specialist Wise has officially launched current accounts for its three million active customers and business clients in the United Kingdom. To mark this significant expansion beyond its core remittance business, the fintech is establishing a physical presence on Oxford Street. Visitors to this temporary location can test various features, set up their accounts, and receive a virtual card instantly. A physical card follows shortly after the digital onboarding process. This move represents a strategic evolution for Wise as it seeks to become a primary financial hub for individuals and businesses with international requirements.

The new current account is designed to meet the needs of globally mobile users through a dedicated Travel Hub. Within this digital environment, customers can access British Pound details, along with over 20 other local account formats. This allows users to send and receive money in more than 70 countries as if they were residents of those countries. Furthermore, the account supports setting up direct debits for recurring payments, such as energy bills or streaming services. To enhance the offering’s premium feel, Wise is also introducing an Airport Lounge Pass feature for its account holders.

One of the most competitive aspects of the launch is the focus on interest rates for idle cash. Wise notes that approximately 250 billion pounds is currently held in traditional UK current accounts, earning zero interest. In response, Wise Current Account customers can earn a 3.26 per cent variable rate on their British Pound balances through the firm’s Assets Interest feature. Around 4 billion pounds of UK customer deposits are already held within the existing Wise Assets ecosystem. This transition toward a yield-bearing current account model aims to challenge the dominance of high street banks that have historically offered low returns on liquid deposits.

The fintech is also expanding its demographic reach by introducing a Young Explorer card. This product is linked directly to a parent’s account and allows children to learn the basics of financial management. Parents retain full control over spending limits and receive instant notifications for every transaction the child makes. Nilan Peiris, the Chief Product Officer at Wise, says the new account gives customers a smarter way to manage their daily financial needs. He emphasises that users can now hold and access their money, earn a return, and split bills at low cost, with no hidden fees. This milestone confirms the ongoing trend of specialised fintech firms expanding into full-service banking to capture a larger share of their users’ daily financial lives.
