Albania’s banking sector is accelerating its digital transformation push, with Tirana Bank launching a new omnichannel retail banking platform built on Backbase’s AI-native Banking OS. The rollout marks one of the country’s most significant retail banking technology upgrades to date, as financial institutions across the Balkans increasingly modernise customer channels, payments infrastructure, and digital servicing capabilities. The platform, deployed on Microsoft Azure and delivered within 12 months, introduces a unified banking experience across mobile and web channels. Business banking functionality is expected to be added later this year as the bank continues expanding its digital ecosystem.
Expanded Digital Services Across Retail Banking
The implementation significantly broadens Tirana Bank’s self-service banking capabilities, allowing customers to manage accounts, deposits, transfers, bill payments, card services, and online lending through digital channels. Customers can also apply for consumer loans and credit cards digitally, while managing multi-currency accounts in both Albanian lek and euros.
The rollout reduces the need for branch visits for routine banking activities, reflecting a wider industry shift toward fully digital servicing models designed to improve customer convenience while lowering operational costs.
Backbase said the project represents a milestone for the Albanian banking market and highlights the region’s increasing investment in cloud-native banking infrastructure.
Robert Mihaljek, Regional Vice President for South East Europe at Backbase, said Tirana Bank aimed to position itself at the forefront of Albania’s national digitalisation agenda.
AI-Native Banking Platforms Gain Momentum
The launch comes as banks across Central and Eastern Europe increase spending on AI-enabled banking systems, cloud deployments, and customer experience platforms to compete more effectively with digital-first financial providers and fintech challengers.
Embedded personal finance management tools within the new platform provide customers with real-time spending insights and budgeting visibility, capabilities that are rapidly becoming standard expectations in retail banking.
Tirana Bank said the launch forms part of a broader long-term digital transformation strategy focused on delivering scalable and customer-centric banking services.
Lila Canaj, Chief Retail Business Officer at Tirana Bank, said the TiBank+ platform was designed to create a more seamless and intuitive banking experience while maintaining the trust and human interaction associated with traditional banking relationships.
Apple Pay Added To Mobile Banking Ecosystem
As part of the rollout, Tirana Bank has also introduced Apple Pay support within its mobile banking application, expanding digital payment options for retail customers in Albania.
The move reflects the growing demand for mobile-first payment experiences across Southeast Europe, where banks are rapidly modernising digital wallets, contactless payment services, and embedded financial tools.
What this means for the industry
- Regional banks are accelerating cloud and AI platform adoption to modernise retail banking operations.
- Omnichannel banking is becoming a competitive requirement rather than a differentiator.
- Digital lending and self-service onboarding continue reducing dependence on physical branches.
- Southeast European banking markets are increasingly becoming active digital transformation hubs.
- Embedded financial management tools are emerging as core customer engagement features rather than optional add-ons.
