Banks have spent years layering new digital channels on top of legacy systems, often leaving frontline operations fragmented across multiple platforms. Backbase is now positioning artificial intelligence as the connective tissue that can bring those systems together. The company has introduced an AI-native Banking Operating System designed to unify customer interactions, employee workflows, and AI agents within a single operational environment.

Backbase launches AI-native Banking OS

Dutch banking technology provider Backbase has announced the launch of its new AI-native Banking OS, describing the platform as a major milestone in the company’s two-decade history.

The system introduces a new operating framework called the Unified Frontline, where customers, bank employees, and AI agents operate within a shared environment that spans digital channels, front-office activities, and operational processes.

Rather than replacing a bank’s core systems, the Banking OS sits above existing infrastructure such as payments, card management, risk platforms, and CRM systems. The platform is designed to connect these components through a unified layer that provides a shared view of customers while coordinating actions and workflows across the bank.

The platform can analyse interactions, authorise actions, and continuously improve through feedback from operational outcomes. According to Backbase, much of the daily work in banking happens in the operational gaps between systems—such as handoffs, coordination tasks, and exception management—areas where traditional software platforms struggle to deliver efficiency.

Drawing on insights from more than 120 banking deployments, the company estimates that roughly 80% of frontline banking work occurs between systems rather than inside them, highlighting why many early AI initiatives have struggled to scale in financial services.

New architecture designed for AI-driven operations

The new Banking OS introduces three architectural layers designed to support AI-enabled operations.

The Intelligence Layer analyses transaction and account data to detect signals such as revenue opportunities, potential risk exposure, or customer churn indicators. These insights are converted into suggested actions and delivered to the appropriate actor—whether that is a bank employee, a customer, or an AI agent.

The Semantic Layer, known as Nexus, creates a continuously updated record of every customer, account, product, and service interaction. This shared data layer ensures that both employees and AI agents access the same real-time information when responding to customer needs or executing operational tasks.

The Authority Layer, referred to as Sentinel, acts as a governance engine that verifies whether each action requested by a customer, employee, or AI system complies with bank policies and regulatory rules. Every action is logged to maintain a complete audit trail.

Together, these components aim to create a coordinated environment where AI can operate safely alongside human employees while maintaining the control and compliance requirements expected in regulated financial institutions.

Toward elastic banking operations

Backbase describes the end goal of the platform as Elastic Operations – an operating model where banks can scale customers, products, and service volumes without a proportional increase in staffing levels or operational complexity.

By coordinating workflows across systems and automating many operational tasks, the platform aims to help financial institutions manage growth while maintaining service quality and operational efficiency.

Backbase has continued to expand globally in recent years. The company reported revenue exceeding $350 million in 2025 and now works with more than 120 financial institutions across 50 countries. Its client base includes organisations such as Navy Federal Credit Union, TD Bank, Standard Bank Group, and Eurobank.
