As banks face growing pressure to deliver faster, more transparent international payment services, technology providers are increasingly focusing on reducing the complexity of cross-border money movement. The latest collaboration between Backbase and Mastercard aims to help financial institutions launch global payment capabilities more quickly while improving the overall customer experience.
Backbase has announced the integration of Mastercard Move into its AI-native Banking OS, giving banks direct access to Mastercard’s global money movement infrastructure through a pre-built connector.
The integration is designed to simplify the deployment of cross-border payment services by eliminating much of the custom development work traditionally required to connect payment networks with digital banking platforms. Financial institutions using Backbase can now manage the entire international payment journey, from customer initiation through settlement and reconciliation, within a unified banking environment.
Faster Time-to-Market for International Payments
The new capability allows banks to embed international payment services directly into their existing digital channels, helping them compete more effectively with fintechs and digital-first payment providers that have gained market share through speed, convenience, and transparency.
By leveraging Mastercard Move through the Backbase Banking OS, banks can offer customers a seamless cross-border payment experience without the complexity of building and maintaining multiple integrations.
The collaboration also aligns with Backbase’s broader ecosystem strategy, which combines payments, fraud prevention, open banking, dispute management, and other banking services within a single operating platform.
Initial Focus on Europe and MENA
The rollout will initially target financial institutions across the European Union and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, where demand for efficient cross-border payment services continues to grow among consumers, businesses, and expatriate populations.
Mastercard Move provides access to a global network supporting money transfers across more than 200 countries and territories. The platform connects over 17 billion endpoints and enables transactions in 150 currencies, giving banks extensive international reach through a single integration.
Reducing Complexity for Banks
A key objective of the partnership is to reduce the operational and technical challenges associated with launching international payment services. The pre-integrated connector is now available to Backbase customers and includes support for implementation planning, technical assessments, and deployment guidance.
As banks continue modernising their payment infrastructure, partnerships between banking platform providers and global payment networks are becoming increasingly important in helping institutions deliver faster and more competitive cross-border payment experiences.
What this means for the industry

- Cross-border payments are becoming a core component of digital banking platforms rather than standalone services.
- Financial institutions face increasing competition from fintechs and digital-first payment providers on speed, transparency, and user experience.
- Embedded payment infrastructure partnerships are emerging as a faster path to market than building proprietary international payment networks.
