Banks are increasingly reorganising around technology rather than traditional business lines as AI, engineering and digital platforms become central to growth strategies. Commonwealth Bank of Australia is the latest lender to overhaul its executive structure, creating new technology leadership roles as it doubles down on AI and digital capabilities.
Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has unveiled a major shake-up of its technology leadership team, highlighting how large banks are increasingly restructuring around software, data and artificial intelligence.
The bank has appointed Victoria Ledda as Group Chief Information Officer and Rodrigo Castillo as Group Chief Technology Officer, with both executives joining CBA’s leadership team from 1 July, subject to regulatory approvals.
The appointments accompany the creation of two dedicated executive technology positions, reflecting the growing strategic importance of engineering, AI and digital infrastructure across the bank.
Under the new structure, Ledda will oversee business-aligned technology strategy and delivery, while Castillo will be responsible for enterprise technology foundations, engineering, cybersecurity and AI capabilities.
CBA said the changes are intended to strengthen customer experience, improve operational resilience and support the bank’s long-term digital transformation agenda.
Ledda joined CBA in 2021 and has held several senior roles, including Executive General Manager for Institutional Banking and Markets Technology and Executive General Manager for Retail Technology. Before joining the bank, she spent 15 years at Goldman Sachs in engineering and technology leadership positions across London, New York and Sydney.
The leadership changes underscore a broader shift taking place across the banking industry, where technology is becoming a boardroom priority rather than simply a support function. As lenders invest heavily in AI, cloud infrastructure and digital platforms, many are redesigning their operating models and elevating technology executives into core strategic roles.
For banks, technology is increasingly defining competitiveness, and executive structures are evolving accordingly.
