Bank of America Plans $4 Billion Investment to Accelerate Digital Transformation

Bank of America is ramping up its technology investments with a $4 billion commitment to accelerate artificial intelligence, automation, and digital banking capabilities across its global operations.

Bank of America has announced plans to significantly increase its investment in digital technologies, committing $4 billion to new technology initiatives as part of a broader strategy to strengthen artificial intelligence, automation, and digital banking capabilities across its operations.

The announcement was made during the bank’s first Investor Day in 15 years, where executives outlined their vision for expanding the use of next-generation technologies to support growth across all business divisions.

The $4 billion investment forms part of Bank of America’s annual technology spending of approximately $13 billion, reflecting the institution’s ongoing focus on innovation and modernization. Over the past decade alone, the bank has invested more than $100 billion in technology, highlighting its long-term commitment to digital transformation.

A key area of focus is data and artificial intelligence. Since 2021, the bank has allocated over $1.5 billion to strengthen its data infrastructure, enabling broader AI adoption and helping teams generate deeper insights into customer behavior and financial trends.

Cybersecurity also remains a priority, with the bank investing around $1 billion annually to safeguard its digital platforms and customer information against emerging threats.

Technology spending linked to strategic initiatives such as AI has also grown significantly, rising by approximately 44% over the past decade as the bank continues integrating intelligent technologies into its services.

Hari Gopalkrishnan, Bank of America’s chief technology and information officer, said the institution will prioritize AI tools that can be deployed across its eight major business lines, including consumer lending, retail banking, and global markets.

One of the bank’s most prominent digital innovations is Erica, its AI-powered virtual financial assistant. Since its launch in 2018, Erica has processed more than three billion customer interactions and currently averages around 58 million interactions each month. The bank plans to expand Erica’s availability from mobile devices to desktop platforms in the coming year.

Brian Moynihan, chair and CEO of Bank of America, noted that the popularity of Erica reflects the increasing demand for convenient digital banking experiences.

He said the technology allows the bank to deliver faster access to services while maintaining operational efficiency, helping meet the expectations of customers who increasingly rely on digital channels for financial management.
