Artificial intelligence is moving rapidly from experimental pilots to large-scale operational deployment in the banking sector. South Korea’s Samsung SDS is now leading one of the most ambitious projects in this space after being selected to develop an AI agent platform for Woori Bank. The initiative reflects a growing trend among global financial institutions to embed AI agents directly into core banking processes in order to automate complex workflows, enhance productivity, and transform how banking operations are executed.
Samsung SDS has secured a major role in Woori Bank’s artificial intelligence transformation programme, marking a significant step forward in the integration of AI agents within core financial services operations.
The technology provider has been selected as the preferred bidder for Woori Bank’s new AI agent project, which is expected to become one of the first large-scale implementations of AI agents across banking workflows. The initiative will connect multiple internal banking systems and deploy more than 175 AI agents capable of executing end-to-end operational tasks using large language model technology.
According to Samsung SDS, the financial industry is rapidly evolving beyond the use of AI as a basic productivity tool. Instead, institutions are beginning to integrate intelligent agents that can automate entire operational processes and support decision-making across different departments.
Woori Bank plans to deploy the AI agents across 29 key tasks within five strategic areas of its operations. These include customer relationship management, corporate lending, wealth management services, internal controls, customer service functions, and broader workflow automation. By redesigning existing processes around AI-powered agents, the bank aims to increase operational efficiency and reduce task processing times by approximately 30 percent.
The implementation will be built on Samsung SDS’s proprietary AI agent platform, FabriX, which enables organisations to develop and manage multiple AI agents operating across different environments. The system will provide a multi-model architecture capable of integrating various large language models to support different operational tasks within the bank.
In addition to deploying the AI agent platform, Samsung SDS will integrate the technology into Woori Bank’s existing legacy infrastructure. The company will also establish a data management framework designed to support large-scale agent orchestration and ensure seamless data flows across banking systems.
The project is scheduled to begin in May, with an initial rollout of around 90 AI agents expected by December this year. The deployment will gradually expand throughout 2026, ultimately creating a fully AI-enabled financial operations environment within the bank.
Beyond the AI initiative, Samsung SDS has also secured contracts to support Woori Bank’s broader IT modernisation programme. This includes migrating core infrastructure from legacy Unix-based systems to Linux environments, a shift aimed at improving scalability, interoperability, and cloud readiness.
The infrastructure transition will cover both core banking systems and digital channel platforms. By adopting a Linux-based architecture optimised for cloud environments, the bank aims to enhance system flexibility while maintaining stable operational performance as it expands its digital services.
