Northrim Bank Selects Narmi to Modernise Digital Banking Platform

Northrim Bank has selected digital banking technology provider Narmi to modernise its digital banking ecosystem as the Alaska-based financial institution accelerates its digital transformation strategy. The implementation will unify digital banking and account opening through the Narmi One platform, enabling the USD 3.4 billion community bank to deliver a more seamless customer experience across Alaska and the Pacific Northwest while continuing to support customers in regions where physical branch access can be challenging.

Unified Digital Banking Experience

Following an evaluation of its digital banking strategy, Northrim selected Narmi to provide what it described as a stronger “digital front door” capable of delivering a modern banking experience while preserving the personalised service associated with community banking.

The deployment will combine Narmi’s integrated digital banking platform with streamlined digital account opening, allowing customers to access banking services more conveniently regardless of their location.

For Northrim, strengthening digital capabilities is particularly important given Alaska’s vast geography, where many customers rely on digital channels as their primary method of interacting with the bank.

Supporting Community Banking Through Technology

According to Northrim Bank, the investment is designed to meet growing customer expectations for intuitive digital experiences while maintaining the local relationships that differentiate community banks from larger national institutions.

Narmi’s expertise in supporting financial institutions running the FIS IBS core banking platform was also a factor in the bank’s decision.

The implementation reflects a broader trend across regional banks investing in modern digital infrastructure without replacing their existing core banking systems. This mirrors the growing industry focus highlighted in The Banks That Master Orchestration Will Beat the Banks That Build Everything, where institutions increasingly integrate specialised technology platforms rather than developing every capability internally.

Expanding Digital Capabilities Across the FIS IBS Community

Narmi said Northrim joins a growing number of financial institutions using the FIS IBS core banking platform alongside the Narmi One platform.

The company continues to expand its presence among community and regional banks seeking to enhance digital banking capabilities while leveraging their existing core banking investments and broader technology ecosystems.

The announcement also reflects the continued momentum behind digital transformation initiatives, with banks increasingly prioritising customer experience alongside operational efficiency. As discussed in Every Conversation With AI Is Becoming a Banking Channel, financial institutions are investing in digital engagement platforms that strengthen customer interactions beyond traditional branches and mobile applications.

Modernisation Without Losing the Human Connection

Community banks continue to face growing competition from larger financial institutions that invest heavily in digital banking experiences.

Rather than competing solely on scale, many regional banks are adopting modern technology platforms that allow them to combine digital convenience with relationship banking.

By modernising customer onboarding and digital banking while retaining its local service model, Northrim aims to strengthen both customer experience and long-term competitiveness.

The strategy also reinforces a broader industry trend explored in Banks Don’t Need More Data. They Need Better Decisions. Technology investments increasingly deliver the greatest value when they improve customer outcomes rather than simply adding new digital capabilities.

What it means for the industry

  • Community banks continue investing in enterprise-grade digital banking platforms to remain competitive with larger institutions.
  • Modern digital account opening has become a key component of customer acquisition and retention strategies.
  • Banks are increasingly enhancing existing core banking systems through specialised technology partners rather than replacing core platforms.
  • Digital transformation strategies are focusing on balancing technology innovation with personalised customer relationships.
  • Regional banks continue to demonstrate that modern digital experiences can complement, rather than replace, community banking models.
