Cross-border corporate payments have long remained one of the slowest and most expensive processes in global finance, despite rapid advances in digital banking. While stablecoins have attracted significant attention in retail payments and cryptocurrency markets, large multinational corporations are now beginning to test their potential for real-world treasury operations. Hyundai Card’s successful pilot demonstrates how regulated digital assets could streamline intercompany fund transfers, reduce settlement times, and reshape the way global businesses manage liquidity across international subsidiaries.
South Korean financial services provider Hyundai Card Co., Ltd. has successfully executed a live, stablecoin-based cross-border corporate remittance pilot for its parent conglomerate, Hyundai Motor Company. The proof of concept (PoC) marks a distinct transition beyond isolated, sandbox-style blockchain trials, demonstrating real-world intercompany fund clearance and treasury management over public decentralised networks. The operational framework successfully bypassed traditional correspondent banking networks to execute corporate liquidity routing between the carmaker’s North American and Mexican manufacturing and sales entities.
The initial transaction layer involved converting $20,000 in fiat liquidity held by Hyundai Motor America into the U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin USDT. The digital assets were then routed across the Avalanche blockchain network to Hyundai Motor Mexico, where the treasury team instantly liquidated the tokens back into U.S. dollar cash balances. Hyundai Card reported that the end-to-end routing, cryptographic verification, and local ledger settlement averaged seven minutes. Traditional cross-border SWIFT wire transfers traversing commercial bank lines typically require three to four hours, and occasionally multiple business days, to clear similar intercompany liquidity requests.
To move the corporate pilot out of laboratory boundaries and into active corporate accounting workflows, Hyundai Card spent months coordinating extensive pre-transaction audits across both international jurisdictions. The financial firm mapped out complete process architectures to satisfy complex local accounting practices, corporate tax definitions, legal transfer provisions, and multinational internal treasury controls. The foundational pilot was supported by a dedicated group of Web3 and financial infrastructure partners, with Tether providing the dollar-backed liquidity tokens, Avalanche serving as the high-throughput settlement ledger, and fintech utility Axiym engineering the programmatic payment plumbing connecting the corporate bank portals.
Hyundai Card is currently finalising preparations to launch a second phase of international testing by the end of July 2026, shifting its focus toward Hyundai Motor’s active European operating units. The upcoming trans-European trial is engineered to test multi-currency on-chain conversions beyond the standard U.S. dollar, measuring exact foreign exchange (FX) cost efficiencies and localised liquidity spread optimisation. To handle the expanded multi-currency architecture, global payment network Visa Inc., alongside stablecoin issuer Circle, will join the consortium to integrate native Euro and alternative fiat-backed token instruments into the global treasury pipeline.
What it means for the industry
- Stablecoins are moving beyond experimentation, with large enterprises beginning to use them for real corporate treasury and cross-border liquidity management.
- Corporate treasury could become one of the biggest institutional use cases for blockchain, where faster settlement directly improves cash flow and working capital efficiency.
- Traditional correspondent banking models face growing competition, particularly for intercompany payments that do not require multiple intermediary banks.
- Stablecoin adoption is increasingly becoming an ecosystem effort, bringing together banks, payment networks, blockchain platforms, fintech providers and regulated token issuers.
- Multi-currency stablecoin infrastructure is emerging as the next milestone, allowing businesses to optimise foreign exchange costs while accelerating international settlements.
- Successful enterprise pilots are likely to encourage wider institutional adoption, particularly as regulators develop clearer frameworks for digital assets and tokenised payments.
