GCash and Careem Pay are strengthening cross-border remittance services between the UAE and the Philippines through a new wallet-to-wallet integration. The partnership reflects growing demand for faster, lower-cost digital remittance solutions across key global corridors.
A major advancement in the cross-border financial corridor has arrived, as the prominent Philippine digital wallet provider GCash establishes a formal partnership with Careem Pay. This collaboration is specifically designed to simplify the process of sending remittances for the large community of Filipino expatriates currently living and working in the United Arab Emirates.
The two organisations finalised their agreement during a meeting at Careem’s regional headquarters in Dubai, marking the launch of a direct wallet-to-wallet transfer system.
This new integration allows users based in the United Arab Emirates to send funds across international borders without the typical delays associated with conventional bank transfers. Furthermore, the digital nature of the platform removes the need for individuals to visit physical remittance centres to complete a transaction.
When a user sends money through the Careem mobile application, the funds are credited directly to the recipient’s GCash account. These transactions typically clear within minutes, providing a level of speed and convenience previously difficult to achieve with traditional methods.
Beyond the digital transfer capabilities, the partnership also significantly broadens the options available for those receiving the funds. While digital credit is the primary feature, the collaboration also supports cash pickup services at nearly 15,000 locations across the Philippines. This expansive network ensures that even family members who may not have consistent access to a mobile data connection or a digital wallet can still access the financial support sent from abroad.
The introduction of this service serves as a vital economic lifeline for the Filipino community in the Middle East. Remittances play a crucial role in the Philippine national economy and are often the primary source of income for many households. Arjun Varma, who serves as the General Manager for GCash International, emphasised the practical and emotional impact that these financial transactions have on families. He noted that for many overseas workers, these transfers are about much more than just numbers on a screen. The money is frequently used to support loved ones by covering essential school fees or helping elderly parents manage their daily living expenses.
To begin using this streamlined service, customers must first download the Careem application on their mobile devices. After the installation is complete and the user has set up their profile, they can navigate to the Send Abroad option in the digital payment interface. This user-friendly approach is intended to lower the barrier to entry for digital finance and encourage more expatriates to move away from slower, more expensive cash-based remittance services.
Mohammad El Saadi, the Vice President of Careem Pay, noted that the direct link to the Philippine digital wallet provider significantly improves the overall experience of sending money across borders. He believes that this direct connection provides the reliability and speed essential for families who depend on timely fund delivery. Cutting out multiple intermediaries and utilising modern financial technology helps both companies make the global movement of money as simple as sending a text message.
As more workers migrate internationally in search of employment, the demand for fast and secure digital remittance corridors continues to grow. This partnership between a major Middle Eastern technology platform and a leading Southeast Asian fintech firm exemplifies how cross-regional cooperation can address real-world financial challenges for millions of people.
