Azerbaijan’s Bank ABB Launches AI Conversational Voice Assistants

Voice banking is evolving from a customer service channel into a transactional banking interface. Bank ABB’s launch of AI-powered voice assistants reflects a broader shift across the banking sector, where financial institutions are embedding conversational AI directly into everyday banking journeys. By allowing customers to complete transactions through natural-language voice commands, banks are moving beyond chatbots and toward AI-driven digital assistants capable of handling increasingly complex financial interactions. The development highlights how emerging-market banks are often able to move quickly with AI adoption, leveraging new technologies to improve customer experience, reduce operational costs, and accelerate digital engagement.

Bank ABB, a leading financial institution in the South Caucasus region, has officially launched its proprietary artificial intelligence conversational voice assistants, “AI-nur” and “AI-khan,” following a successful beta testing phase. The voice-enabled solution is among the first conversational AI applications of its kind deployed in Azerbaijan’s banking sector. Since its initial rollout, the technology has attracted over 230,000 active users and successfully managed more than 2.5 million unique customer interactions.

The new system allows retail customers to use natural-language voice commands to perform core banking operations. Users can seamlessly transfer funds between personal cards and bank accounts, initiate peer-to-peer money transfers utilising mobile phone numbers, and instantly block or reactivate payment cards. The implementation forms part of a massive technological modernisation effort at Bank ABB, which has deployed 180 distinct generative and predictive AI models across its corporate functions. This broader AI infrastructure has generated over 35 million AZN in positive financial impact for the institution.

To ensure strict compliance with regional data privacy and financial regulations, all voice processing and transaction execution workflows are managed entirely within the bank’s secure digital infrastructure, in accordance with stringent banking and cybersecurity standards. Moving forward, Bank ABB plans to expand the functional capabilities of both assistants, introducing advanced predictive banking features and broader integration options. The rollout aligns with an ongoing trend across emerging financial markets, where retail institutions leverage localised conversational layers to minimise call-centre overhead and lower transaction friction.

What this means for the industry

  • Voice is becoming a banking channel. Banks are increasingly exploring voice interfaces as an alternative to mobile app navigation, creating more intuitive ways for customers to complete everyday transactions.
  • AI is moving from support to execution. Rather than simply answering customer questions, conversational AI is now being trusted to perform regulated banking functions such as transfers, card management, and account servicing.
  • Call centre transformation will accelerate. As voice assistants become more capable, banks can automate a growing percentage of routine customer interactions, reducing operating costs while improving service availability.
  • Emerging markets are becoming AI innovation hubs. Banks outside traditional financial centres are increasingly deploying advanced AI solutions at scale, challenging the perception that innovation is concentrated in North America and Western Europe.
  • Trust and security will determine adoption. As voice-enabled transactions become more common, institutions will need robust authentication, fraud detection, and governance frameworks to ensure customers remain confident using AI-driven banking services.
  • The next phase is predictive banking. Future conversational assistants are likely to move beyond executing instructions and begin proactively recommending actions, identifying financial risks, and offering personalised guidance based on customer behaviour and financial goals.
  • Banks are building AI ecosystems, not standalone tools. Bank ABB’s deployment of 180 AI models demonstrates how leading institutions are increasingly treating AI as a foundational capability embedded across operations, customer engagement, risk management, and decision-making rather than a collection of isolated projects.
