SoftBank Group is seeking additional banking partners to participate in a massive $40 billion financing facility tied to its investment in artificial intelligence leader OpenAI. The deal represents one of the largest credit-backed commitments linked to the AI sector and highlights the scale of funding now flowing into the global race to develop advanced AI infrastructure.
The financing arrangement has entered what bankers describe as a “soft launch” phase, during which additional lenders are being approached to join the loan syndicate as sub-underwriters. According to sources familiar with the discussions, participating banks are expected to commit roughly $5 billion each to the financing package.
The bridge facility is currently being underwritten by several major global banks, including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Mizuho Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group. The loan is structured to mature in March 2027 and forms part of SoftBank’s broader strategy to deepen its involvement in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence sector.
The financing move underscores the aggressive investment approach taken by SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son as the company positions itself at the centre of the global AI ecosystem. SoftBank has already committed more than $30 billion to OpenAI and views the company as a cornerstone of its technology investment strategy, alongside other key holdings such as its majority stake in semiconductor designer Arm Holdings.
However, the scale of SoftBank’s financial commitment has drawn increasing scrutiny from credit analysts and market observers. The company’s expanding debt load, driven largely by its technology investments, has raised concerns about balance sheet risk.
Earlier this year, S&P Global Ratings revised SoftBank’s credit outlook from stable to negative. The agency cited potential risks to liquidity and asset quality stemming from the group’s heavy exposure to OpenAI and the broader volatility associated with AI-sector investments.
SoftBank declined to comment publicly on the details of the financing discussions.
At the same time, the company is exploring additional funding channels to support its investment strategy. SoftBank is reportedly in discussions with investors regarding a potential multi-tranche bond issuance denominated in both US dollars and euros. The planned bond sale could provide another significant source of capital as the conglomerate continues to expand its presence in artificial intelligence and next-generation technology platforms.
With AI emerging as the most competitive battleground in the technology industry, SoftBank’s willingness to deploy large-scale capital reflects the high stakes involved in securing strategic positions within the sector.
What this means for the industry
- AI is attracting unprecedented levels of capital. The scale of SoftBank’s financing highlights the enormous funding requirements associated with leading AI platforms.
- Global banks are becoming key enablers of the AI economy. Large syndicated loans are increasingly supporting strategic technology investments.
- Debt-funded technology bets carry growing risk. Credit rating agencies are closely monitoring the financial implications of large AI investments.
- The AI race is intensifying globally. Strategic investors are deploying billions to secure influence over foundational AI technologies.
- Capital markets will play a major role in AI expansion. Bond issuances and syndicated loans are becoming critical tools for funding large-scale AI infrastructure and development.
