PayPal Integrates Pix to Accelerate Small Business Growth in Brazil

PayPal is deepening its presence in one of the world’s most dynamic digital payments markets by integrating Brazil’s hugely popular Pix instant payment system into its merchant platform. The move enables small and medium-sized businesses to accept the country’s preferred payment method directly through PayPal, simplifying checkout experiences and helping merchants tap into Brazil’s rapidly expanding e-commerce economy.

PayPal has officially integrated Pix, the instant payment system used by over 170 million Brazilians, into its merchant platform to support small and medium-sized businesses. This rollout allows local entrepreneurs to offer the country’s most popular payment method directly through the PayPal Complete Payments interface. The integration of Pix is to reduce checkout friction and help merchants capture a larger share of sales in a market where digital commerce is projected to approach 944 billion dollars by 2026.

The integration arrives as PayPal celebrates 15 years of operations in Brazil. Since its creation by the Central Bank in 2020, Pix has become the dominant financial tool in the country, processing approximately 196 billion transactions through September 2025. Data show that over 90 per cent of the adult population in Brazil has used the system, which recorded more than 7 billion transactions in January 2026 alone. For small businesses, the ability to accept these instant transfers within a global platform provides a locally preferred experience backed by international fraud protection and cross-border capabilities.

Brunno Saura, the general manager of PayPal Brazil, emphasised that bringing Pix into the company’s merchant ecosystem provides entrepreneurs with a high-conversion way to get paid. This initiative aligns with local market demands, as recent studies indicate that transaction security and ease of use are the primary criteria for Brazilian entrepreneurs when selecting a payment provider. Current surveys show that six out of ten small business owners consider digital payment tools essential for operational success, with nearly 80 per cent already utilising specialised platforms to navigate the digital economy.

The strategic move is timed to capitalise on the massive shift in Brazilian consumer behaviour, with Pix expected to account for 40 per cent of all online payments by the end of 2026. While credit cards remain a significant factor for instalment purchases, the speed and accessibility of instant bank transfers have redefined the retail landscape. By unifying local payment methods with established business tools, PayPal is positioning its infrastructure as a comprehensive solution for a new generation of digital-first entrepreneurs seeking to scale both domestically and internationally.

What this means for the industry

  • Local payment methods are now essential for global platforms
International payment providers can no longer rely on cards alone. Integrating dominant local systems like Pix has become critical to competing in fast-growing digital markets.
  • Instant payments are reshaping online commerce
Pix’s real-time transfers offer speed, lower costs, and broad accessibility, making it increasingly attractive compared to traditional card payments.
  • SMEs gain access to global infrastructure
By combining Pix with PayPal’s fraud protection, dispute management, and cross-border capabilities, small businesses can scale internationally while still using locally preferred payment options.
  • Brazil reinforces its position as a fintech innovation hub
Pix’s rapid adoption demonstrates how central bank-led payment systems can transform a country’s financial ecosystem and accelerate digital commerce.
  • Competition among payment providers will intensify
As Pix continues to dominate transactions in Brazil, global and regional fintech firms will likely accelerate integrations with instant payment networks to remain relevant.
