Jet Bank Launches Albania’s First Fully Digital Bank

Jet Bank Launches Albania’s First Fully Digital Bank

Jet Bank has officially launched Albania’s first fully digital bank, entering the market just months after securing a banking licence from the Bank of Albania as a greenfield institution. Built in six months on Backbase’s AI-native Banking OS, the mobile-first bank offers customers a fully digital onboarding experience, multi-currency accounts, savings products and payment services without relying on traditional branch infrastructure.

Built as a Greenfield Digital Bank

Jet Bank has become the first bank in Albania to launch as a fully digital institution, following the successful rollout of its mobile banking platform.

Unlike many digital banking launches that evolve from existing financial institutions, Jet Bank was established as a new licensed bank rather than through the acquisition or transformation of an incumbent lender.

According to the companies involved, a team of approximately 70 people built the bank in six months, significantly reducing the development timeline typically associated with launching a regulated financial institution.

Mobile-First Banking Experience

The digital platform enables customers to remotely open and manage multi-currency current accounts, savings accounts and term deposits through a mobile application.

Additional services include virtual and physical debit cards, foreign exchange capabilities, personalised savings goals through JetPlans, and secure in-app messaging and live customer support.

By launching without legacy banking infrastructure, the bank begins operations with a modern technology architecture designed to support rapid product development and digital customer engagement.

Strong Early Customer Interest

More than 75,000 people joined Jet Bank’s waiting list ahead of launch, representing significant early demand in a country with a population of approximately 2.8 million.

Customers are now being invited to activate their accounts in phases as the bank gradually expands access to the platform.

The launch reflects growing consumer demand for mobile-first financial services in a market that has traditionally relied heavily on cash transactions and branch banking.

Built on AI-Native Banking Infrastructure

Jet Bank was developed entirely on Backbase’s AI-native Banking OS, providing the institution with a unified digital platform from launch.

The project highlights how cloud-native banking platforms are reducing the complexity of establishing new regulated banks by eliminating many of the technology integration challenges associated with legacy core systems.

As financial institutions increasingly adopt platform-based architectures, new entrants are able to bring digital banking services to market more quickly while maintaining flexibility for future product expansion.

What this means for the industry

  • Greenfield digital banks continue to demonstrate that new banking institutions can be launched significantly faster using modern banking platforms.
  • Mobile-first banking models are expanding into emerging markets with traditionally branch-based financial systems.
  • Legacy technology is becoming less of a barrier for new entrants competing with established banks.
  • AI-native banking platforms are reducing the complexity of launching regulated financial institutions.
  • Consumer demand for fully digital banking experiences continues to grow beyond mature financial markets.
  • Platform-based banking architectures are accelerating innovation and reducing time-to-market for new financial services.
