Ethiopian Fintech Seqela Technologies Launches AI-Powered Loan Appraisal Platform HK LAMS

Seqela Technologies is accelerating Ethiopia’s shift toward digital lending with the launch of its AI-powered loan appraisal platform, HK LAMS. The system replaces manual, paper-heavy loan evaluation processes with a fully digital workflow that integrates borrower data, collateral records, and identity verification. Already deployed at Dedebit Credit and Saving Institution, the platform has processed more than 45,000 loan applications while reducing approval times by up to 70 percent.

The Ethiopian financial sector is undergoing a digital transformation as Seqela Technologies, a local fintech startup, officially launches its AI-driven loan appraisal platform, HK LAMS. Designed to dismantle the manual bottlenecks that have long plagued the national credit system, the platform is already operational at Dedebit Credit and Saving Institution. Replacing paper-heavy workflows with an integrated digital approach has helped the system successfully process over 45,000 applications and reduce average loan processing times by up to 70 per cent.

In Ethiopia, obtaining loan approval traditionally takes several weeks due to fragmented data and document-heavy procedures. Seqela’s solution addresses this by consolidating borrower data, collateral records, and identity verification into a single, high-speed interface. Haben Kiros, the founder of Seqela Technologies, emphasised that the primary constraint in the lending ecosystem is not just access to capital but the inefficient infrastructure behind processing. The firm’s goal is to build a fast, compliant, and risk-aware system that serves as a core utility for lenders rather than just another consumer application.

The technical foundation of HK LAMS relies on a sophisticated stack of emerging technologies. The platform utilises Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to analyse physical documents and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with geotagging to validate the physical location and value of property assets used as collateral. Furthermore, the system is fully integrated with Fayda, Ethiopia’s national digital identification system, as well as public land registries. This connectivity allows for automated Know Your Customer (KYC) checks, significantly reducing the need for repeated manual reviews and site visits.

Risk management is embedded directly into the software through advanced AI models. These tools perform real-time affordability checks and debt-to-income analyses while providing early-warning indicators to flag potential defaults before they occur. The platform is specifically optimised for collateral-based financing, featuring multi-level approval workflows and comprehensive audit trails that ensure full regulatory compliance. This level of transparency is critical for microfinance institutions and banks looking to scale their lending portfolios without increasing their risk profile.

As Seqela Technologies continues to push for the modernisation of lending workflows, it plans to expand the HK LAMS system to additional banks and financial institutions nationwide. The company is also the developer of other digital infrastructure projects, such as Zemeo, reflecting a broader commitment to automating the region’s financial backbone. By reducing the time required to secure credit from weeks to days, the startup is replicating successful digital shifts seen in other leading African fintech hubs.

The success of this rollout demonstrates the power of local innovation in solving region-specific infrastructure challenges. By turning a document-heavy hurdle into a data-driven advantage, the firm is helping to unlock economic potential for thousands of small businesses and individual borrowers. As demand for credit grows alongside Ethiopia’s expanding economy, the transition to automated, AI-powered appraisal systems will likely become the new standard for the national banking industry.
