Centenary Group and Huawei Partner for Digital Banking Inclusion in Uganda

As financial inclusion strategies evolve across Africa, banks are increasingly turning to cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and telecom-grade technology partnerships to reach populations traditionally excluded from formal banking systems. Centenary Group’s partnership with Huawei reflects a growing recognition that expanding rural banking access now depends as much on digital infrastructure and data capabilities as it does on physical branch expansion.

Uganda-based financial institution Centenary Group has entered into a strategic partnership with Huawei Uganda to launch a technological initiative designed to extend banking services to the country’s rural and underbanked populations. The two organisations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the global headquarters of Huawei in Shanghai, establishing a framework to deploy artificial intelligence and cloud services. The project directly targets rural communities, farmers, and small business owners, who represent a core demographic for Centenary Group as it manages a base of more than 4 million clients across Uganda.

The collaboration focuses on modernising digital infrastructure to improve credit access and deliver more responsive banking services to agricultural and remote areas. The comprehensive agreement covers eight specific development areas, including digital infrastructure development, human capital training, joint innovation hubs, research initiatives, cloud computing integration, and enterprise modernisation. By upgrading these technical foundations, the organisations intend to eliminate traditional operational barriers that limit financial participation in rural regions.

John Ddumba-Ssentamu, Chairman of Centenary Group, described the strategic partnership as the most significant technology agreement signed by the financial group in decades. He emphasised that the joint efforts are focused on building a scalable system that will positively impact millions of individuals facing financial exclusion across the region. The initiative aligns with a broader momentum across emerging markets, where telecommunications providers and financial institutions increasingly merge cloud infrastructure and AI layers to establish accessible, digital-first banking networks.

What this means for the industry

  • Financial institutions across emerging markets are accelerating partnerships with large technology providers to modernise banking infrastructure and scale digital inclusion initiatives faster.
  • Rural banking transformation is becoming heavily dependent on cloud computing, AI-driven analytics, and mobile-first delivery models capable of operating efficiently in geographically dispersed regions.
  • Agricultural finance is emerging as a major growth area for digital banking platforms, particularly in African markets where farmers and small businesses remain underserved by traditional credit systems.
  • Partnerships between telecom infrastructure specialists and banks are becoming increasingly strategic, as connectivity, cloud services, and banking platforms converge into unified digital ecosystems.
  • The agreement strengthens the role of Huawei as a key infrastructure partner in emerging-market financial modernisation projects beyond telecommunications.
  • For Centenary Group, the partnership signals a shift toward scalable digital banking models designed to support millions of customers without relying solely on costly branch-led expansion strategies.
  • The deal also reflects a wider industry movement where AI is increasingly being positioned as a tool for improving credit accessibility, customer servicing, fraud monitoring, and financial product personalisation in underserved markets such as Uganda.
