How BBVA Became a Global Leader in Open Banking

While many banks have been cautious about opening their systems to external developers, Spain-based BBVA took a very different approach. Over the past decade, the global banking group has invested heavily in digital infrastructure, positioning itself as one of the pioneers of open banking and API-driven financial services.

BBVA’s strategy has focused on transforming the bank from a traditional financial institution into a technology platform capable of integrating with fintech partners, developers, and digital businesses. By exposing core banking capabilities through secure APIs, BBVA has enabled external companies to build new financial services directly on top of the bank’s infrastructure.

Today, BBVA is widely recognised as one of the first major banks to successfully operationalise open banking at scale.

Building a Platform Banking Strategy

BBVA’s digital transformation began with a broader shift toward platform-based banking. Rather than viewing banking services as standalone products, the bank began redesigning its technology architecture to allow external systems to connect through standardised APIs.

This shift allowed BBVA to expose services such as account information, payments, identity verification, and onboarding to external partners. Fintech companies and digital platforms could then integrate these services into their own applications without requiring complex infrastructure development.

By turning core banking capabilities into modular services, BBVA effectively positioned itself as a financial infrastructure provider.

Launching the BBVA API Marketplace

One of the most important milestones in BBVA’s open banking journey was the launch of its API marketplace, which provided developers with access to banking capabilities through a structured platform.

Through this marketplace, companies could integrate a range of services including:

  • Account information access
  • Payment initiation services
  • Identity verification tools
  • Customer onboarding capabilities
  • Financial data insights

Developers were provided with documentation, sandbox environments, and testing tools that allowed them to build financial applications quickly and securely.

This approach enabled BBVA to foster an ecosystem of fintech partners and developers building services on top of its infrastructure.

Accelerating Fintech Partnerships

Open banking APIs also enabled BBVA to dramatically expand its fintech partnerships. Instead of lengthy integration projects, fintech companies could connect to BBVA’s infrastructure through secure API interfaces.

This made it easier for the bank to collaborate with companies specialising in areas such as digital identity, payments, financial management tools, and lending services.

By lowering the technical barriers to collaboration, BBVA created a model where innovation could occur both inside and outside the bank.

Preparing for the Open Banking Regulatory Era

BBVA’s early investment in APIs also positioned the bank well for emerging open banking regulations such as Europe’s PSD2 framework.

While many financial institutions approached open banking primarily as a compliance requirement, BBVA viewed it as a strategic opportunity to expand its digital ecosystem.

Because the bank had already developed a strong API infrastructure, it was able to adapt quickly to regulatory requirements while continuing to innovate in partnership with fintech companies.

A Technology-First Banking Model

BBVA’s open banking strategy reflects a broader shift toward technology-driven banking. The institution has increasingly positioned itself as a digital company operating within the financial sector.

Key elements of this transformation include:

  • cloud-enabled infrastructure
  • API-based service architecture
  • data-driven financial services
  • strong partnerships with fintech companies

By building a technology-first banking model, BBVA has demonstrated how traditional banks can compete effectively in the digital economy.

What This Means for the Industry

  • Open banking APIs allow banks to become financial platforms rather than closed institutions.
  • Developer ecosystems can accelerate innovation beyond what banks can build internally.
  • Early investment in API infrastructure helps banks adapt quickly to regulatory changes.
  • Platform-based banking models enable new fintech partnerships and digital services.
  • The future of banking will likely be built on open, API-driven financial ecosystems.
